A clear flight plan for coding agents

Agents work best when discovery is small, commands are exact, and every mutation has an observable result. Rocketicons provides a CLI and local MCP server backed by the same catalog and project operations.

The MCP package and new CLI commands are available in the repository build; their npm release is pending.

    Find and add one icon

    1. Search with npx rocketicons search calendar --collection fi --json or MCP recommend_icons with the project path, intent, and source file.
    2. Inspect the exact @collection/icon-id, license, and SVG resource.
    3. Reuse an existing file under src/ri/icons when it already fits.
    4. Dry-run CLI add, or use MCP plan_icons to review files and dependencies before apply_icons.
    5. Use the returned import relative to the source file and run doctor.

    Add a small set

The CLI accepts several exact IDs. Keep the change auditable:

    terminal

To use MCP, configure your client to start npx -y rocketicons mcp over stdio. The dedicated npx -y @rocketicons/mcp command also works. Call recommend_icons, then plan_icons with the exact IDs and from_file; review the plan and pass its planId to apply_icons. This applies setup and icons, then verifies the project. Broad search falls back to a bundled index when Algolia is unavailable.

For Tailwind CSS 4 web projects, the plan includes the stylesheet edit that registers @rocketicons/tailwind. Check the doctor result after apply: its styling data and issues identify a missing CSS import, plugin directive, or Vite/PostCSS integration. Pass stylesheet_path to both plan and apply if several Tailwind stylesheets are active.

After an icon is added, you can edit its generated component in src/ri/icons/. doctor reports non-formatting edits as customized, and recommend_icons can suggest reusing that component. plan_icons lists it under preservedIcons; apply_icons and add_icons leave it untouched. Formatting changes alone do not mark it customized. remove_icons protects customized files from deletion.

Use SVG in a plain HTML site

For a site that does not use React, call MCP search_icons and get_icon to choose an exact ID and check its license. Call get_icon_svg with that ID to receive complete SVG markup. Paste the markup into HTML or save it as an .svg file. This path needs no init_project call or Rocketicons project configuration.

    Style states explicitly

    Verify the mutation

    terminal

Report each changed file. Run the project's own type check and relevant web or native build before declaring success.

    Prompt you can reuse

Use Rocketicons for icons in this project. Reuse a suitable component under src/ri/icons when possible. Otherwise find an exact @collection/icon-id, inspect its license and SVG, plan the changes, apply the reviewed plan, use an import relative to the source file, and report every changed file. Do not install or import a full icon collection.

For a compact machine-readable reference, point the agent to /llms.txt.
